Ever since the brace against Sunderland, Adnan Januzaj has been trending all over the internet. Both the goals that he scored were top class, and deserving of the praise that he’s receiving. But his performance was not so out-of-this-world as was made out, and certainly didn’t deserve the amount of trending that it got. But then again, this is the internet, so well…
Here, we’ve tried to find five reasons why Adnan Januzaj was the most trending over the past 2 days:
5. He’s a Manchester United player
With the help of Kantar, a market research company, Manchester United set out to find the number of followers it has and they arrived at 659 million adults. That’s out of an estimated world population of 5 billion adults. Whether the number is really true or not, we’ll have to take it at face value considering the club themselves announced it.
With such a large base of fans, they definitely consist a large contingent of the ones that are active on the internet. And with rival fans more intent on what Manchester United are doing than their own team, a lot more people would have been added to the number of people who would have searched for information on Adnan Januzaj.
4. He’s a Muslim (!)
What has religion got to do anything with football? I don’t know, ask the number of people who searched for “Adnan Januzaj muslim?”, which was trending on Google. At the time of writing, it was still being searched for, along with “Adnan Januzaj religion?”.
For a sport that is a globally transcending as football, it should matter little what the religion of a player is. All that matters is whether he’s got the skills and whether he can play well for his team or not. But sadly, that does not seem to be enough for a large number of fans on the internet.
Unfortunate, really.
3. Youth Player
Apparently, a young player coming good for Manchester United seems to be a rare occassion! Granted, for an 18 year old to score 2 goals on his first start is a thing to celebrate. But that is for Januzaj to do, and not the millions of fans around the world.
Playing youngsters in the first team is not an entirely novel thing. After all, Arsene Wenger has made a career out of that policy! But it seems Manchester United fans have been famished for somebody to come good from the Academy so that they can also join the debate when it comes to whose Academy brings out the best talents.
But I have sneaky feeling that the real reason is perhaps the United fans have had to put up with such colossal failures as Anderson and have to contend with Ashley Young starting ahead of Kagawa. So, when a youngster showed some real talent, perhaps it was natural for them to go full retard!
2. A victory after so long!
Let’s face it – Manchester United have been nowhere close to good this season. Of course, it is very, very early in the season and they do have a history of starting slowly. But the concern for most fans is the fact that the team has been playing very badly, and they don’t have the calming presence of Sir Alex to rely on! And the defeats they have been facing in the league have only added to the woes.
So, when one player was responsible for them to finally win again, it is of course natural to find out all about him.
Who know, he could be their next messiah, right?
1. England’s desperation
Ever since the 1966 World Cup triumph, England has been trying to win the coveted prize again. However, they have been found out on the international stage more times than they would like to acknowledge. And they have, for ages now, looking for the next big thing that will bring home the desired trophy.
But then, England has always prided itself in that “a cold night at Stoke” kind of game, but that won’t just cut it on the big stage. I presume the suits at the FA have given standing instructions to try and find players from other countries who could be eligible to play for England. They, at least, would have been protected from the atrocious policy of lumping the ball forward.
So, after Januzaj’s brace, fans of England football, who are not confined to the United Kingdom by the way, might have started searching for him to get to know more. No wonder then that it has been trending so much.
On a side note, I wonder why it didn’t trend on the holy grail of Social Media, Twitter. I can only think of reason – a majority of them might have misspelled his last name!
