5 Goalkeepers Real Madrid might target this summer

Uncertainty looms around the future of Keylor Navas at Real Madrid

Real Madrid's performance this season has been no way near the level they achieved in the previous years. Their hopes of retaining the La Liga title might be over as the gap between the league leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona, only seems to be getting bigger.

The most shocking of all, however, was when the European champions were knocked out of the Copa Del Rey by mid-table team Leganes.

This season has proven that the goalkeeping department is going to need sweeping changes if the Spanish giants are to perform better next season. Madrid's decision to stick with current goalkeepers Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla has resulted in disappointment.

Casilla has been largely iffy while Navas, who has been great for Madrid in previous seasons has struggled with injuries. Both of them are already in their early 30’s which is a clear indication that they must sign a world-class goalkeeper who can be relied upon for the long term.

Madrid will surely have this in mind when the summer transfer window opens and it is no doubt that they will look for the best. Here are 5 possible goalkeepers Real Madrid could sign this summer:

#5 Gianluigi Donnarumma

Donnarumma is one of the hottest prospects in world football at the moment

The AC Milan golden boy has been backed by the legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to have an extraordinary career. The 18-year-old is one of the top shot-stoppers in Europe right now. If Madrid wants a long-term solution, then Donnarumma may be the answer.

Recently, the young goalkeeper has been under fire from his own fans as they accuse him of “betraying them”. Negative banners and chants left Donnarumma in tears in a recent match.

This sad incident occurred after he signed a deal making him the third highest earning goalkeeper with his brother joining the club as part of the deal. This uncertainty may well make Donnarumma pack his bags. Madrid surely have kept an eye on the proceedings. However, Real Madrid will have to pay huge bucks to lure him to the Spanish Capital.

#4 Jan Oblak

Atletico Madrid has the reputation of grooming world-class goalkeepers and Jan Oblak certainly falls into that category. The Slovenian international has conceded only 54 goals in his first 100 Liga outings; a record surpassing legendary keepers like Victor Valdes and Iker Casillas.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper's contract ends in 2021 and has a buyout clause of €100 million. The Spanish giants are certainly keeping tab on the Atletico Madrid keeper but they have to face a stern test from PSG who are also looking for his signature.

#3 Kepa Arrizabalaga

Madrid were looking to sign him in the summer 2018 but the 23-year-old Spanish goalkeeper signed a long-term seven and a half-year contract with Athletic Bilbao. His release clause moved from €20 million to €80 million. The shot-stopper has four clean sheets, conceding 20 goals in 15 appearances despite Athletic Bilbao's poor display which has them languishing in 13th position in the La Liga standings.

Real Madrid are struggling to find a long term replacement for Iker Casillas and Kepa, who is now 23, would be a perfect replacement for the Spanish giants. It will be interesting to see whether Real Madrid will go for him in the summer or not.

#2 Thibaut Courtois

Real Madrid had a long-interest in signing Courtois. The Belgian has only a year left in his contract and is yet to make a renewal. Fellow teammate and compatriot Eden Hazard signing a new contract will have a part to play in whether he will continue with Chelsea or not.

Madrid might be a great destination for the Belgian, who has even admitted that he eventually wants to return to Spain as his two young children live there. The Belgian has kept 15 clean-sheets so far for Chelsea this season and it looks like he will be heading back to Spain in a big summer move.

#1 David De Gea

David de Gea
De Gea almost made the move to Real Madrid in 2015

The Spaniard is perhaps the best goalkeeper in the world right now. He was very close to parting ways with Manchester United for Madrid way-back in 2015, included Navas heading to Manchester as a part of the deal. The three-time Player of the Year winner for United is at the peak of his powers and it looks like a matter of time as De Gea has also shown interest in returning back to Madrid.

With Madrid looking to overhaul squad this summer, De Gea seems to be top-choice. The Manchester United shot-stopper has 15 clean-sheets in 26 Premier League matches this season.
