After not winning the Premier League in just over 13 years, it’s time for us accept that Arsène Wenger will never win another major trophy at Arsenal. It’s all well and good winning a few FA Cups and Community Shields here and there but that’s not what a club of Arsenal’s stature should be aiming for.

The fans protested all season-long last year and they were rewarded with Wenger signing a new 2-year deal. With that deal, Ivan Gazidis and the club signed their death wish, as they guaranteed no major trophies would be coming to the club in that time.

Here are 5 reasons why Arsène Wenger will never win a major trophy at Arsenal again.

#5 Other managers have surpassed him

Arsène Wenger was a revolutionary figure in football. When he arrived at Highbury he changed the dieting, finances and philosophy of the club. He set the pace and other managers lay wake in his dust. Now all those managers who grew up in the shadow of Wenger, have now overtaken him and learnt from his naivety.

Wenger used to be the best manager in the Premier League, now he’s arguably 5th or 6th in the league. There are far greater thinkers now in the league and the Frenchman stands no chance of outsmarting them over the course of a campaign.

The league, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup will all be hotly contested by the top teams in England and Arsenal are no longer one of them.

#4 Lost the fans' backing

Arsenal fans pay the highest season tickets in Europe

The 67-year old used to be a cult figure in North London now he’s seen as enemy number one. He’s the face of Arsenal’s stagnancy and fans vent all their frustration at him. Every week we’re greeted with #WengerOut banners and protests, these displays of rage only further contribute to the toxic atmosphere already at the club.

When most of the Emirates crowd are constantly dishing out abuse, it makes the players nervous and they ultimately make mistakes. Playing at home no longer feels like an advantage for the Gunners and it’s what Wenger has created. No matter how big a club is, it needs fan support and Arsène Wenger doesn’t have that privilege anymore.

#3 He’s lost the dressing room

Alexis Sanchez was reportedly keen on a move to Manchester City

As the man that many former players call their ‘father’, it’s indicative of how bad things have become at Arsenal that he’s now lost the dressing room. The transfer window allowed the Frenchman to clear out much of the ‘deadwood’ at the club but he wasn’t fully able to shift the players who aren’t happy.

Alexis Sánchez, Mesut Özil & Jack Wilshere are all big characters at Arsenal and their obvious unhappiness at the club is unsettling the dressing room. Sánchez was rumoured to have been the source of several training ground bust-ups last season and now that he hasn’t been granted a move to Manchester City, he will only cause more disputes.

At the end of the day, the players Arsène Wenger brought to the club, don’t want to play for him anymore. They see the club is going nowhere and are tired of not being tactically prepared for the big games. They’re tired of being sent out for the slaughter week in week out. Wenger may be a respected figure in the world of football but in his own dressing room, he’s no one.

#2 No Plan B

Liverpool v Arsenal - Premier League
Arsenal have only won 2 away games against the top 6 in 26 attempts

You look around the top teams in world football today and you see managers who best represent the tactical evolution of the modern era. Football has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry that’s reliant on statistics and ever-changing playing concepts. Arsène Wenger stands out like a sore thumb in this tactically reliant game, why? Because he only knows one way of playing football.

Wenger’s laissez-faire attitude towards football has been both a gift and a curse. In 1996, he took the league by storm as he didn’t try to coach players, but instead facilitated their strongest attributes. This, in turn, helped maximise team cohesion, leading to the glory years of Arsenal.

Fast forward a decade and Wenger has the same approach to match days and it doesn’t work anymore. Rarely does he analyse the weaknesses of opposing teams, he just encourages his players to ‘play their game’. Teams have sussed that out, nullified Arsenal and then realised the Gunners have no plan B to combat.

#1 He refuses to spend

Arsenal only brought in 2 players this summer

It’s been another frustrating transfer window for the Arsenal faithful. Once again, they’ve been promised big names like Kylian Mbappe, Julian Draxler and Thomas Lemar, instead they’ve signed Alexandre Lacazette and a Bosnian full-back on a free. In the end, the club made a £18million profit this summer, one of the few clubs in the league to do so.

To compete with the best, you must get the best talent and be willing to match their value. Penny-pinching and saving money doesn’t yield results in this game anymore and Wenger’s frugal attitude will only continue to hinder Arsenal for the next 2 years.
