You look around the top teams in world football today and you see managers who best represent the tactical evolution of the modern era. Football has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry that’s reliant on statistics and ever-changing playing concepts. Arsène Wenger stands out like a sore thumb in this tactically reliant game, why? Because he only knows one way of playing football.

Wenger’s laissez-faire attitude towards football has been both a gift and a curse. In 1996, he took the league by storm as he didn’t try to coach players, but instead facilitated their strongest attributes. This, in turn, helped maximise team cohesion, leading to the glory years of Arsenal.

Fast forward a decade and Wenger has the same approach to match days and it doesn’t work anymore. Rarely does he analyse the weaknesses of opposing teams, he just encourages his players to ‘play their game’. Teams have sussed that out, nullified Arsenal and then realised the Gunners have no plan B to combat.
