5 strikers Real Madrid can target this summer

Real Madrid CF v Borussia Dortmund - UEFA Champions League
Madrid's form seems to have deserted them this season

Real Madrid have suffered a massive dip in form this season after the high of becoming the only team to win consecutive Champions League titles at the end of last season. Zinedine Zidane's position has come under intense scrutiny and his managerial post seems less secure with every bad game Madrid have to endure.

However, the major reason for their fall from is the lack of goals from their expensively-assembled forward line. Cristiano Ronaldo seems woefully out of form as does Karim Benzema, so much so that none of them are even in the top 10 goalscorers in La Liga, something which would have been unimaginable at the start of the season. Gareth Bale's constant battle with injuries has him in and out of the team, which does not help Real's cause.

A squad revamp seems inevitable and here we take a look at 5 strikers they could be targeting to their head their attack come the summer:

#1 Edinson Cavani

Paris Saint-Germain v Celtic FC - UEFA Champions League
Cavani is one of the deadliest strikers in the world

Criminally underrated are the words which can be best used to describe Edinson Cavani. A world-class forward who has kept banging in the goals every season since 2007, the long-haired Uruguayan always rises upto the challenge.

Despite the big-money arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe this season, he has scored 28 goals in 36 appearances and in the process became PSG’s all-time top scorer, going past Ibrahimovic’s record of 156 goals for the French side. To add to that, he also has 5 assists this season.

His feud with Neymar over a penalty earlier in the season made massive headlines. Though they seem to have made their peace with each other, Cavani would not want to play second fiddle to another superstar after he finally seemed to get out of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's shadow. The quarter-final tie against Madrid could be the perfect audition for a summer move, not that he needs it.

Should Real target him this summer, they would know they are getting a proven and consistent poacher who is strong in the air and can also be deadly inside the box. He would certainly be a great addition to their squad and become one of their famed Galacticos.

#2 Robert Lewandowski

RSC Anderlecht v Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League
Lewandowski could get his dream move in the summer

Nothing can be said about Lewandowski which has not already been said. A prolific marksman first with Borussia Dortmund and now with their arch-rivals, Bayern Munich; the Polish international has never endured a poor season so to speak.

Bayern got a mighty bargain when they got him for nothing in the summer of 2014. He has scored 25 goals in 31 appearances this season in all competitions and with the sale of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal, he faces little to no competition to win the top-scorer award in the Bundesliga.

He has recently claimed that he dreams of a move to Real Madrid and it presents a suitable deal for both parties involved as they would be more than willing to shell out the bucks to acquire a striker of Lewandowski’s calibre.

#3 Radamel Falcao

Tottenham Hotspur FC v AS Monaco FC - UEFA Champions League
Falcao seems reborn since moving back to Monaco

Radamel Falcao was once one of Europe's most feared strikers before a horrific knee injury seemed to have ended his career. He could not play for Colombia at the 2014 World Cup and had looked down and out. But he regained his fitness and went on loan, first to Manchester United and then to Chelsea but his time in England did not bear much fruit.

Now back at Monaco, he seems to have found his feet and has started scoring for fun again, evoking memories of the fearsome striker he once was. He played a pivotal part in ousting Manchester City in the Champions League last season. This season too, he is third in the top-scorers list in Ligue 1 with 17 goals, only behind Cavani and Neymar.

Having played in Spain before, earning his reputation with Real's cross-town rivals, Atletico Madrid, he has the experience and we all know his goal-scoring capabilities. His stint at top clubs did not work out the way that he would have wanted to but he moved when he came back from injury and was not at his lethal best.

This time the situation is different. He definitely has it in him to deliver the goods for Madrid and he can further enhance his stature of being a world-class forward.

#4 Mauro Icardi

FC Internazionale Milano v Empoli FC - Serie A
Icardi has been in phenomenal form in the past couple of seasons

Mauro Icardi's rise to be one of the top strikers in world football is amazing to say the least. Having started his career at Sampdoria, he quickly established his vast talent, coming off the bench on his debut to score the winner for them. He was a pivotal part of their squad and earned his move to a big club when he moved to Inter in 2013.

This is where he underwent the transition from a good striker to a world-class one. An unfortunate injury prevented him from playing for most of his first season with the club but once he did come back, there was no stopping him.

This season, he has scored 18 goals in just 25 appearances. He also has leadership capabilities, judging by the fact that he has been Inter's captain for two seasons now and the extra responsibility has just seemed to spur him on.

The Argentinian may have his share of controversies off the field but no one can deny his ability on it. Argentina manager, Jorge Sampaoli has claimed that Madrid are watching him closely and a big-money move is certainly justified for the mercurial forward. There is the small matter of him being a La Masia product, though...

#5 Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton - Premier League
Kane has dismissed his critics spectacularly

Harry Kane was accused of being a one-season wonder when he was struggling for a bit but we can all agree that he has proved otherwise. Top scorer in the Premier League this season and winner of the Golden Boot for the past two, he certainly has started the process of establishing his name in the top echelons of football.

He recently became the second-fastest to 100 Premier League goals, only behind the great Alan Shearer. His exploits have answered England's prayers of wanting a world-class forward after the decline of Wayne Rooney and he is definitely a certainty in their starting line-up in the World Cup and could also be their captain.

Despite the performance of Tottenham in recent years under Mauricio Pochettino, they are inconsistent and do not seem to be a club which could be challenging for top honours regularly. A move to Madrid could give Kane the opportunity to be at such a club.

Real Madrid already know of his tremendous abilities as a goal-scorer, having played Tottenham in the group stages of the Champions League this season, where Kane was instrumental in defeating them. He could just be the answer to Madrid's attacking problems next season.
