5 things which have not gone right for Alexis Sanchez this season

Alexis Sanchez has been less influential than expected

Alexis Sanchez has had a dull start to his Manchester United career. The Chilean has scored only two goals in 13 appearances for the club since joining in January.

He had undergone a pretty nasty time towards the end of his Arsenal career and the Gunners. By January, Arsenal fans were keen to see their number 7 leave the club as soon as possible. Many had expected Sanchez to see out his contract before leaving on a free transfer this coming summer.

Prior to his substandard performances, the Chilean was warmly welcomed into the Manchester United family. To the utter disappointment of many, Sanchez has not lived up to expectations set at Old Trafford.

Here are five things which have not gone right for Alexis Sanchez.

#5 Losing the support of Arsenal fans

Chelsea v Arsenal - Carabao Cup Semi-Final: First Leg
One of Sanchez's last matches for Arsenal was against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semifinals

As soon as Alexis Sanchez joined Arsenal in 2014, he soon became a hero for the club's fans. He aided the Gunners in scoring vital goals, clinching victories in numerous competitions and was the player who was eager to play every single week. His hard work and energetic performances in every match were very much appreciated by the fans.

In his first season with Arsenal, he scored an average of 0.43 goals per match and had a shot accuracy of 40%. Over time, his cross accuracy dipped below 40%, which is an extremely poor record for someone of the Chilean's talents.

Sanchez grew increasingly frustrated with Arsene Wenger who withdrew him halfway through games and seemed unforgiving of the errors made by others. For a long period of time, Wenger defended Sanchez, claiming that the Chilean has always given his best when playing for Arsenal. However, that was not how the fans perceived the situation to be.

After a failed summer move to Manchester City, Sanchez was determined to make a move in January and eventually left for Old Trafford. The 29-year-old hardly received any well-wishes from the rest of the Arsenal players after the announcement that he has joined the Red Devils was made official.

When he quoted Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, as a person who encouraged his move, Arsenal fans flew into a rage. That matter was later clarified by Sanchez to be untrue.

Losing the support of so many Arsenal fans is truly disappointing for Sanchez and it was something that the Chilean could have handled better.

#4 Not getting his dream move to Manchester City

Sanchez was once expected to join Manchester City

Sanchez played a crucial role in Manchester United's victory over their arch-rivals Manchester City to deny the latter clinching the title right after the derby ended.

The Chilean was highly anticipated to reunite with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. Talks about him joining Manchester City had begun before the last summer transfer window and the Spanish coach was keen to take him into the team.

Unfortunately, signing Sanchez soon became extremely costly and Guardiola chose to end his interest in his former Barcelona man. In order to get a move away from Arsenal, Sanchez eventually chose to join Mourinho.

#3 Criticised by football legends

Sanchez has not impressed football legends

Sanchez's influence in games has dropped drastically this season, for both Arsenal and Manchester United. His performances are monitored closely by pundits around the world who have frequently singled him out.

Mourinho is expecting Sanchez to have a better showing from next season onwards, but Jamie Carragher was quick to disagree.

''Because Sanchez has been playing in England since 2014, he should have had a quicker impact than he has.

Even after three months of playing for Manchester United, the Chilean still seems lost at times. He has not been able to contribute and perform up to the mark on a consistent basis.

The former Liverpool star was not the only legend who has talked about the Chilean's poor season. Graeme Souness added that the midfielder has gone missing from the game and made insignificant contributions.

The last thing a club would want is to see their new signing getting put off by so many people at once. It will take a lot of effort for Sanchez to pull up his socks and regain his reputation. The former Arsenal player has probably not heard so many negative reviews in his career.

#2 Frustrating Manchester United players

Sanchez warming up with his new team-mates

Alexis Sanchez arrived in a swap deal as he replaced Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Manchester United. The latter joined Arsenal following the agreement. Ever since Sanchez arrived, Marcus Rashford has yet to play the full 90 minutes in a Premier League match.

The lack of game-time has already angered Rashford who believes that he can do a lot better than the Chilean. At the same time, Sanchez has done little to justify his price tag and a spot in the lineup.

There are several options for Mourinho on the left wing and some players could be leaving this summer because of Sanchez's sudden arrival in January. Instead of embracing the opportunity to work with a new team-mate, some Manchester United players are frustrated that they have lost their positions in the starting lineup.

After United's shock loss to Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, some of his team-mates were unhappy that Sanchez had failed to make significant defensive contributions when needed. He squandered the team's chances far too frequently and was wasteful in possession.

His relationship with the Red Devils' players is seemingly not as good as people have thought it would be.

#1 Less than impressive performances

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United - Premier League
Sanchez looks frustrated with his games

In the most recent defeat to West Bromwich Albion, Sanchez failed to show the creative side of him. He had little impact on the game and lost possession far too easily.

While playing against Crystal Palace, the Chilean lost the ball 19 times in the first 45 minutes. That is unacceptable for a player with such a huge price tag to his name. Sanchez was brought into the team to strengthen the attack, but it seems like he has not adapted well to Mourinho's style of play.

The former Arsenal man surely would have been hoping for a bright start to his career with Manchester United, but right now, it looks far from that.

The January signing could soon be dropped to the bench after Mourinho spoke of dropping players in the upcoming FA Cup semifinals against Tottenham Hotspur.
