5 worst signings of David Moyes

David Moyes seems to be having a tough time at Manchester United, especially after his inability to bring in any star player to the club. Maybe it was a good thing for Manchester United; after all, not every player you sign in a hurry can get the job done, if not become a roaring success. Moyes should know, considering he did have to deal with a few players who did not live up to his expectations when he signed them. While he had a success with some very good players, here is a look at 5 of his worst:

James Beattie

Before joining Everton, James Beattie had a decent spell at Southampton, going on spurts of goal scoring runs for them from time to time. In fact, in his last season for the Saints, he was the 3rd highest scorer in the Premier League with 23 goals and also helped them to the FA Cup final.

So, when David Moyes signed Beattie in the hope that he would lead the charge for Everton, he wasn’t too far off the target. However, it turned out badly for the club as he could only score 13 goals out of a total of 76 appearances, with both injuries and lack of form plaguing his time with the Toffees.

Per Kroldrup

David Moyes signed Per Kroldrup for 5 million from Udinese, but the full back did not live up to his billing.

Upon arriving in England, he promptly got into injuries, and for all the time he was here, which was just one season, he made only 2 appearances in the Everton kit, making it perhaps the worst signing during David Moyes’s time at Everton.

At the end of the season, he was shipped off to Fiorentina, where he could only make 117 appearances in all his 6 years there.

Andy Van Der Meyde

Another disappointment for Everton and David Moyes was Andy Van Der Meyde. Though he was initially good, the Dutchman regressed during his stay at the club.

Not only did he have problems adjusting to the pace and strength of the English league, he also had trouble getting along with Moyes too. Though he did stay 4 years at the club, he only made 20 appearances and by the time he left the club, he was way below the pecking order.

Before coming to Everton, he represented the Netherlands in the Euro 2004, but he did not make a single appearance for the Oranje after that.

Simon Davies

Simon Davies was signed from Tottenham Hotspur for 4 million but he turned to be another disappointing player for Everton.

Though a lot was expected from the winger, he disappointed during his spell at the club. He lasted only a season and a half with the Toffees, with David Moyes deciding to cut his losses. Davies scored only one goal during his stay at Everton.

He had a relatively better time at Fulham, where he was transferred, finishing runners-up in the 2009/2010 Europa League, with 2 very important goals in the semi-final and the final.

Richard Wright

Richard Wright was perhaps the unluckiest of them all. His spell at Everton was better known for his freak injuries than any of his performances!

Wright was signed from Arsenal, where he did not impress, having got only 12 appearances. He had a good start to his time at Everton, he suffered the first of his freak accidents, when he fell out of his loft!

Since then, after returning from that injury, he was consigned to the bench. He got his second chance when veteran keeper Nigel Martyn got injured. But he immediately got himself injured again, this time by falling on a sign warning players to use temporary goals.

He never fully recovered his place even after coming back, and remained understudy to new signing Tim Howard, before eventually being sold off.
