Lionel Messi is not the only one who has been tormented by Godin, his biggest rival Cristiano Ronaldo also had to suffer at the hands of the Uruguayan.

Godin has been a rock at the back in all of Atleti’s achievements in recent years, which includes being the only team apart from Barcelona or Real Madrid to win La Liga in the last decade. They also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League on two occasions.

One game that stands out is when Atleti humiliated their arch-rivals with a 4-0 win over Real Madrid at home.

Atleti annihilated Carlo Ancelotti’s side in a game which has been termed as one of Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid’s worst in recent years and it was all down to the supreme defending by Godin and his teammates. Tiago, Saul Niguez, Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic all got onto the scoresheet, while Real Madrid only managed four shots against Atleti – which was equal to the number of goals the home side had scored – with only one of them being on target.

While the strikers earned the plaudits, it was Diego Godin who was the star of the show for Atleti.

The loss proved to be the catalyst of Madrid’s downfall as despite being ahead of Barcelona in the league table on 7th February, the day of this game, they went on to finish second behind their arch-rivals.
