7 ways to know that you are a Real Madrid fan

The heart of Madrid

Traits are things that define an entity. Every person in this world has characteristics. In fact, everything in this world has characteristics. It is what makes them the things that they are.

Since every person in this universe has characteristics, Real Madrid fans are no exception to it. They have some definitive set of qualities that sets them apart from the rest. If a person has those qualities, she/he can be easily classified as a Madridista.

On that note, here are seven such personality traits that Madridistas possess.

#1 You love Raul Gonzalez with a passion

If you are a Madridista and don’t love club legend, Raul Gonzalez Blanco, then what’s the point of being one? Almost every player in the history of the club divided the fans’ opinion of them, but Raul is the one person who was – and still is – loved by all.

At one point, Iker Casillas was of the same calibre. But after his saga with Jose Mourinho, followed by performances that bordered on a travesty, he went on to the wrong side of many Madridistas’ hearts.

However, that is not the case with Raul as he is still revered by Real Madrid fans. Indeed, one of the greatest dreams of millions of Madrid fans is to see him join the club again in a coaching role.

So, if you spot someone who has unconditional love for Raul, she/he must be a Madridista.

#2 You detest Barcelona

The bitterness is apparent

You don’t have to dislike another club in order to like some other. Nah, scrap that, it was a joke. If you like Real Madrid, you are bound to dislike Barcelona – and there are a number of reasons, apart from just pure rivalry, for this to be the case.

Barcelona’s recent success has seen a huge surge in the number of followers they have. Almost every kid who began watching football in the past decade or so is a Barca fan. This means that all they have ever witnessed is a series of success, failure is almost unknown to them.

This, in turn, makes most of them genuinely believe that the Catalan outfit are the greatest of all time. Also, the fact that they, according to them, played the ‘best’ football while picking up silverware makes them more special.

The fun fact, however, is different. Real Madrid still remain the most successful club in the world when it comes to the number of major trophies won. However, according to some Cules, Dictator Franco bought half of those trophies and hence, they are invalid.

And that is why Madridistas dislike Barca with a passion. And if someone finds a Madridista that actually doesn’t dislike the Camp Nou club, it is doubtful whether she/he actually has feelings for the Whites.

#3 You brag about history

Apropos to the point laid out in the previous slide, Real Madrid remain the most successful club in the world, despite the continued years of dominance from the Blaugrana. One can always expect Madridistas to bring out history whenever necessary.

Losing an argument against a Barca fan? State the fact Real have 11 Champions League titles. Losing a match against Barca? State the fact Real have 11 Champions League titles. Can’t find the cure for cancer? State the fact Real have 11 Champions League titles.

Basically, Real Madrid’s history is the answer to all your problems and frustration. Indeed, it can save a dying marriage if need be. All you need to do is bring it up in such a way that people think that you own those accolades more than the club.

If you do that, you are a Madridista.

#4 You still think Atletico are a small club

Despite the fact that the Rojiblancos have been in two Champions League finals in the last three years, they are still a small club according to many Madridistas.

It also doesn’t help their case that they lost to Real Madrid in their last two endeavours. However, they have a league title beside their name, which is just as many as Real Madrid have won in this decade.

And yet, for Madridistas, Atletico Madrid are a small club that nobody cares about. When Simeone’s men became unbeatable, even then the Madrid fans oozed the essence that their neighbouring club are still as invalid as the opinion of a 12-year-old on social media.

And after defeating them in two Champions League finals, it just became further solidified.

#5 You will boo your best players

Madrid’s highest ever goal-scorer is not spared

Real Madrid fans are perhaps the only ones in the world that jeer their club’s best players. Be it Zinedine Zidane during the days gone by or Cristiano Ronaldo right now, some Madridistas at the Bernabeu just love jeering from the stands.

It seems as though being a referee in a football game was the lifelong dream for many of them since they bring out the whistles at the very first opportunity that presents itself.

Have you ever seen Barcelona fans boo Messi? Or Manchester City fans boo Aguero? The answer is a plain and simple no. However, at Madrid, if a player has one terrible game, he will be booed relentlessly. Being a Madrid fan means that you need to have a good jeering record in your CV.

#6 No matter what, Cristiano is better than Messi

Never accept that Messi is the better player

If you are a die-hard Madridista, then there is no way on planet earth you accept that Lionel Messi is better than Cristiano Ronaldo. It simply can’t happen.

You might accept the flat-earth theory, or that eating a vegan diet automatically makes you a better person, or that country music has great lyrics, but you will never claim that the Argentine is better than the Portugal captain.

It is said that in the Indian epic, Ramayana, Rama’s younger brother, Lakshmana, forewent sleep for 14 years because his mother asked him to not hold a single bad thought, even in his dreams, against his brother during his period of exile.

If you claim to be a Madridista and have dreams where you think that Messi is the better player, then you should forbid yourself from falling asleep.

#7 You criticise the transfer policy, yet want expensive players

The Galacticos

And finally, this is what makes you a royal fan of the royal club. Real Madrid are known as the Galacticos because of their tendency to spend big bucks on world class players. Be it Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale or James Rodriguez, the club’s transfer policy always looks to bring in the best, and highly-marketable, players for big amounts.

While signing world class players is something that almost always pleases the fans, signing them for a gargantuan amount is what irks a lot of people.

However, the same Madridistas will go gaga in happiness if their personal favourite non-Real Madrid player is linked with the club for a gazillion euros. If one takes a long hard look at history, they will realise that when it comes to transfers, Real Madrid fans are as ambivalent as it gets.
