Sportswear maker company Adidas have decided to stop selling their limited edition T-shirts after complains from Brazil that they were too offensive and identified the country as a place for sex tourism.
According to the company, the T-shirts were sold only in the United States as a limited edition.
Brazil’s tourism board stated, “Embratur strongly repudiates the sale of products that link Brazil’s image to sexual appeal.”
Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff revealed earlier on twitter,”Brazil is happy to receive tourists for the World Cup, but it is also ready to combat sex tourism.”
Around 600,000 foreign fans are expected at the showcase event and Dilma Rousseff said her government will do everything to prevent sexual exploitation, “The government will increase efforts to prevent sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.”
The ministry of women’s affairs stated that the shirts were offensive and exposed the Brazilian women to the “barbarism” of sexual predators, “This is all the more shocking in a country that just elected a women as its highest authority, which brought greater respect for women and zero tolerance for any form of violence against them.”
