The first day of the 2015 African Cup of Nations saw four sides in action as hosts Equatorial Guinea kicked off their tournament with a draw against Congo, followed by Gabon securing a 2-0 over Burkina Faso in the series of Group A encounters.

Equatorial Guinea started the game in a confident fashion at the Bata Stadium after Emilio Nsue opened the scoring in the 17th minute, which was also the first goal of the tournament. However, with only three minutes to spare until the final whistle, Congo and West Brom forward Thievy Bifouma scored the equalizer for his side, denying the hosts a victory.

“We would have been in serious trouble had we lost. Our tournament could have been over before it started,” said Congo’s head coach Claude Le Roy following the match.
