An Open Letter to Arsene Wenger

Dear Arsene Wenger,

Through thick and thin, your loyalty to Arsenal FC has been unparalleled. When the time was going right, and Arsenal FC were winning trophy after trophy and going unbeaten for a complete season, and during the bad times, even after attracting interest from many top clubs, you stayed back in Arsenal. That speaks volumes of the belief you had in the club and the team you were preparing.

Your mere presence brought a sense of hope in the Arsenal faithful. Even after going without a trophy for so many years, there are many fans who still think you can bring back the glory days to Arsenal.

The beginning of the season wasn’t perfect, going down 3-1 to Aston Villa in front of the home crowd was undesirable and unexpected, but the way the team has shaped up until now is commendable and surely must be eyeing for the ultimate prize, the Premier League title.

During pre-season, Theo Walcott commented that he is targeting Premier League success with Arsenal this season. Team Arsenal is surely on the way to prove Theo right and all others wrong.

Arsenal Premier League standings 1947-2012

One can truly never understand and feel, what you must have gone through and what you must have felt, when year after year top players started leaving the club and the team didn’t win any trophy since 2005, but still, even in those years Arsenal didn’t finish below 4th (in the Premier League). This 3rd or 4th place finish does not bring any trophy, but yet, is a fabulous achievement in itself, considering the fact that Arsenal finished 12th in the 1994-1995 season & 5th in the 1995-1996 season.

Need to bring in another striker

Thierry Henry (extreme right) training with Arsenal team

Thierry Henry is loved by the fans at Arsenal, but another loan spell in the forthcoming transfer window doesn’t look suitable. Considering the availability of players and the form of Olivier Giroud, one must ponder whether to make a move for another striker upfront.

However, an injury to Olivier Giroud would mean that Arsenal will not have a like for like replacement in the striker department. Although Arsenal have Lukas Podolski (yet to come back from injury) and Theo Walcott, these two forwards operate from left and right positions upfront respectively, and playing them as a striker would only add pressure to their game.

It would be wise to look for a backup for Olivier Giroud. There are quite a few options available, but it will all come down to how well you manage to persuade them into joining Arsenal at this time of the season. Atletico Madrid striker, Diego Costa has been in sublime form this season and has an alleged release clause of around £20m, and it would be a very good addition going into the final few months of the season.

Diego Costa (L) and Robert Lewandowski training with Wojciech Szcz?sny (R)

Robert Lewandowski has reiterated his desire to leave Borussia Dortmund, but has not confirmed his destination yet, and can still be lured into joining his international team mates Wojciech Szcz?sny & ?ukasz Fabia?ski at Arsenal.

Defensive constraint

Wojciech Szcz?sny, the Polish international keeper and Arsenal’s first choice (currently), has undoubtedly been in a very good form recently, but is also vulnerable to get overconfident, and loses his rhythm at times. Also, Viviano is currently at Arsenal on loan, which means he would most probably leave at the end of the season. It looks increasingly likely that ?ukasz Fabia?ski would be seeking a move out of the club in search of regular playing time, and establish himself as the first choice goalkeeper at some other club. Considering the current scenario, buying a goalkeeper would not be a bad idea.

Iker Casillas has been the subject of transfers lately, and if you try and get Casillas on board, it would strengthen the already strong Arsenal and can help maintain the top spot in the Premier League. However, it would be a very difficult task to lure Casillas into moving out of his boyhood club.

Many of the fans believe that Bacary Sagna should be given a contract extension and rightly so. By far, Sagna has been one of Arsenal’s best defender, and has been in good form this season. Sagna is experienced and he is well versed with Arsenal’s style of play, and keeping hold of such a player can make the defence stable.

One Arsene Wenger

It is true that, at times, we tend to show impatience in your decisions and get disappointed seeing the players leave, but it is also true that your work as an Arsenal manager since joining the club cannot be emulated. Having said that, it is for you to see and understand, how much you are respected by the fans and people at Arsenal alike, and truly, there has and there can be only ‘ONE ARSENE WENGER.’

Thank you for everything,

An Arsenal fan.
