What's the story?

Mexican international Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano is all set to be the subject of a concerted transfer bid from Arsenal this January, according to a report in British news outlet, The Daily Express. The PSV winger has experienced a storming start to the season, breaking scoring records as he has racked up 10 goals and 6 assists in 15 Eredivisie games so far. With Arsene Wenger resigned to losing Alexis Sanchez for free in the summer, the Frenchman has already lined up a replacement in the form of Lozano. Arsenal are willing to pay a massive fee of €48 million for the 22-year-old, thus making him their second most expensive signing of all time, behind Alexandre Lacazette.

In case you didn't know...

Lozano spent his youth career at Mexican club Pachuca, before making his first-team debut at the age of 18. The 2016/17 season was his breakout year as Lozano went on to win the Golden Boot in the CONCACAF Champions League with 8 goals, as his side went on to win the tournament. In four seasons for Pachuca, Lozano made 149 appearances and scored 43 times. With clubs like Benfica, Manchester United and Manchester City interested, the Mexican international surprised many this summer with a move to PSV Eindhoven, for a paltry €8 million fee.

The heart of the matter

Manchester United were previously interested in bringing Lozano to Old Trafford, but the Red Devils have cooled off their interest off late, eyeing up Bordeaux winger Malcom instead. Thus, Arsenal are favourites to land the signature of Lozano, although Everton have reportedly already lodged a bid for the Mexican international.

Gunners' fans might have a difficult time warming up to Lozano though - he's previously spoken of his admiration for Manchester United, saying "I believe many leagues are beautiful. I like the English and the Spanish very much. But let’s see how things are and decide. The one I would like most is Manchester. I like this club a lot and it’s a very important club."

Author's Take:

With Alexis Sanchez on his way out, Arsenal could very well go searching in the transfer market for someone of his experience and calibre - and could very well be asked to pay a fee in excess of €100 million. In that regard, Lozano represents quite an educated gamble from Arsenal - the winger has the raw materials to become a truly great player.
