Reports: Arsenal interested in signing Manchester United star

Stoke City v Arsenal - Premier League
Arsenal are looking to complete some serious business in the January transfer window

What's the story?

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but it seems like the Gunners themselves are close to signing a United star. Reports in Gambling Times (via ManchesterEveningNews) state that the Gunners are favourites to sign out of favour playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian superstar has largely been frozen out of United's squad in the last few weeks and with Ozil continuously linked with an exit, and it seems like Wenger has turned his attention towards Mkhitaryan to replace the German superstar.

In case you didn't know...

Will Mkhitaryan make the move to Emirates?

Having made the move to Manchester United in 2016, Mkhitaryan has struggled to hold onto a regular starting spot under Jose Mourinho. The Armenian superstar started the season in great form grabbing 5 assists in 2 games, but his recent form has tailed off and it looks like he is out of favour at Old Trafford.

Having been courted by the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool before making a move to Old Trafford, Mkhitaryan might yet end up making the move to The Emirates in the coming months.

The heart of the matter

Ozil and Sanchez look like they are on the way out and Arsenal will be desperate to replace their two superstars. Mkhitaryan might not have been at his best for United, but his passing, vision and dribbling skills can certainly soften the blow of losing out on Ozil.

Capable of playing as a number 10 or on the wings, Mkhitaryan is capable of breaking down opposing defences at his best and it will be interesting to see how the Armenian will fare under Wenger if the move does indeed come to fruition in the coming months.

Author's take

With Mkhitaryan having fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, the playmaker could be available for a low fee. With the future of Ozil and Sanchez uncertain, Wenger should go all out to sign the 28-year-old star.
