Arsenal club secretary David Miles believes that the Gunners will be active in the transfer market until deadline day, and has moved to quell the anxiety of the supporters by saying that the entire team is working ceaselessly towards making new purchases. He also expressed satisfaction with Arsenal’s Champions League group and said that avoiding long travels during their away games is a bonus.
Speaking to reporters after the draw was made, Miles was questioned on the progress of Arsenal’s transfer activity. The North London club have let many important players go this summer, including erstwhile club captain Cesc Fabregas, midfield cog Samir Nasri and veteran left-back Gael Clichy.
As for the players they’ve brought in, it has been a mixture of youth and experienced signings. Gervinho from Lille, Carl Jenkinson from Charlton Athletic and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton have come into the club. Moreover, Japanese whizkid Ryo Miyaichi and Costa Rican striker Joel Campbell have got work permits and will also be a part of the first team next season.
There has been a call for more experienced and quality signings, and Miles was mindful of that when he spoke to the assembled media. He said-
“I think that you’ll appreciate I can’t exactly give you specifics but certainly everyone is committed.
“If there’s quality players to be brought in I’ve got every faith in Arsene Wenger that he’ll do so.
“As you rightly say we’ve got just under a week. I’ve been involved myself in some last minute transfers so until the window actually closes I think that we’re still open for business.”
Speaking about the Champions League draw, he said-
“First of all the first priority was to actually get here I think we’ll be quietly pleased with the draw,”
“We’ve been in the Champions League every season under Arsene’s tenure. I’m pleased we don’t have to travel too far, to the far off eastern European clubs. Arsene will see that as a big bonus.”
Arsenal now travel to Old Trafford to face off against defending champions Manchester United. Thomas Vermaelen seems unlikely to take part in the game as he picked up a knock during the match against Udinese.
