Arsenal should give up trying to sign Julian Draxler in January

Germany Training Session

Arsenal reportedly submitted a bid of around £40 million for German sensation Julian Draxler this week before the January transfer window slams shut. These rumors were quickly shot down by Draxler’s club Schalke who stated that they had no intention of selling their prized asset so soon.

Arsenal should take them seriously and not submit another bid for the player because Schalke aren’t going to budge now even if they are offered a kings ransom. Draxler is a vital part of Schalke and the club would be foolish to part with him mid-way through the season if they don’t have a suitable replacement just yet. Draxler will be sold eventually but its not going to happen in January.

Arsene Wenger should try and sign a striker as that is his clubs most urgent requirement right now. Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski are the only main strikers now with no other options except the unreliable Nicklas Bendtner. Buying a world class striker which could win the Gunners the title is next to impossible right now due to the mid-season but there are loads of talented strikers out there who can be used as backup. The reason why Arsenal have not made any signings right now is due to Wenger being cautious which is the right thing to do.

Draxler would be an excellent signing if they manage to get him in the summer. The 20-year-old operates as an attacking midfielder known for his passing and dribbling ability. The Germany international can be converted into a striker by Arsene Wenger who did the same thing for former Gunner and current Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie who operated as a midfielder at Eredivisie club Feyenoord.

Draxler, who previously stated that he wished to play in the Premier League, may fancy a move to Arsenal due to the presence of so many of his countrymen like Mesut Ozil, Per Metersacker, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry at the London club. The chance to work with a coach like Wenger who has had success with young players could also be a factor in influencing the youngsters decision.

It will be a lot tougher to sign Draxler in the summer because his price would shoot up if he performs well at the World Cup. Other clubs will also start lining up for the youngsters signature in the summer. Manchester United are also interested in signing the attacker due to their shortcomings in midfield.

The reason Arsenal had no competition for Draxler in January is due to rival clubs knowing that Schalke would not be open to a move right now. If Arsenal manage to beat other clubs to Draxler’s signature it would be another coup for Arsene Wenger who captured Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in the summer.

Arsenal can manage without Draxler right now due to their wealth of options if midfield but if he comes to London the Gunners will have one of the most feared midfields in Europe. Draxler can produce scores of goals if he links up with the strikers and can make Arsenal the force they were a decade ago once again. But for now Draxler will be seen in the blue of Schalke rather than the red of Arsenal.
