Arsenal have signed midfielder Mesut Ozil on a £42.4m deal from Real Madrid.

It is understood that Arsenal opened talks on Friday and agreed on a £140,000-a-week wage deal with the German international to make him their club’s record-signing.

Ozil said that Arsene Wenger had a big part to play in him deciding to choose the Gunners over other suitors.

The attacking midfielder said: “While talking with Arsène Wenger, I immediately felt what I had missed at last. This is 100 per cent faith in me. I want to help this club to finally win titles again. I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal. It will be great for my own personal development as a player.”

Real Madrid signed Ozil from German club Werder Bremen in 2010 in a £12.4m deal. The 24-year-old was left on the bench for Real’s 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
