Rumour: Arsenal reported to make £17m bid for Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne after World Cup

Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne

Arsenal are set to make a £17 million bid for Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne but only if he impresses at the World Cup in Brazil this summer, according to the Metro.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who rejected a move for Cesc Fabregas has added Insigne to his list of summer targets as he looks for some more firepower in attack after disappointingly falling away from the title race last season.

The Gunners led the Premier League for the longest period out of any team last season but still finished fourth. However, Wenger did end the club’s 9-year wait for silverware by winning the FA Cup against Hull City at Wembley.

The Frenchman, who surpassed 1000 games in charge of Arsenal last season, has told his scouts to keep a close eye on the diminutive Italian when he faces England, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D.

He is set to play a key role in Italy’s attack and would warrant a price of around £17m, but Wenger is only prepared to submit a final bid for the forward if he does well in Brazil.

Insigne has been watched by Arsenal scouts for Napoli this year, with Wenger being handed excellent reports on him.

If he has a strong summer tournament, it would be enough to convince the north London club to stump up the cash, with Napoli believed to be happy to sell in a bid to raise funds for other deals.
