Gonzalez has been widely tipped to leave the club throughout the summer, with many Spanish and Italian clubs vying for the playmaker’s services.

Back in England, Arsenal are eager to replace Cesc Fabregas and were tipped to raid Marseille to buy Mathieu Valbuena. However, Deschamps revealed that the Gunners were actually in for Gonzalez.

“The one that really interests them is Lucho Gonzalez. Arsene Wenger believes that it is a great player who could be useful to his team even though he does not fit in with his recruitment policy.

“He wanted him on loan but it was not acceptable to us.”

Gonzalez joined Marseille in 2009 and played an important role in their Champions League qualifying campaign.

He was earlier linked with a move away to Serie A giants AS Roma. The player had however blatantly denied a possibility of transfer that time by saying: “I don’t know why there are so many things said about this at the moment. It annoys me a bit. At no time has it left my mouth that I wanted to leave or that I didn’t feel good here. I have a contract with OM until 2013 and the people at the club seem happy with me.”
