The 6ft 6in center back, who plays for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, left his national side’s training camp to finalize his move to Emirates’ club. The defender has reportedly cost Arsenal £10million and will sign on a three-year-deal. Bremen were glad to offload the player who was in the final year of his contract with the German outfit.

Wenger decided to go on a buying spree following 8-2 humiliation against Manchester United. Arsenal were initially keen on signing Bolton defender Gary Cahill but had their bid for the England international turned down twice. Arsenal are thought to have offered around £8million plus add-ons for Cahill with Bolton demanding £12million. Meanwhile, Tottenham also entered the race to sign Cahill, thus starting a bidding war between the North London rivals. Arsenal eventually pulled out of the race and turned their attention to Mertesacker.

Mertesacker, who has played 75 international matches for Germany, will bring the much needed experience to Arsenal’s young defense. But with the player never having played in England before, it would be interesting to see how he copes up with the pace of premier league.

Arsenal have already announced the signing of Park Chu Young and are expected to announce a few more deals on the deadline day, including full-back Andres Santos. Arsenal have also been linked with Blackburn’s Chris Samba, who did not train with the Venky’s owned club on Tuesday, thus refueling rumors that he was in London for a medical. Another target, Birmingham’s Scott Dann is also keen to leave the relegated club in order to continue playing in the premier league.
