Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Lukas Podolski is frustrated at his lack of minutes on the pitch this season, but he has a ‘fantastic spirit and attitude’.

Podolski, 28, has started just two Premier League games this season and featured in just five games in total, meaning his frustration is reaching a tipping point. It was evident in Arsenal’s recent 2-1 win over Aston Villa as cameras spotted him shaking his head in disappointment over being snubbed to come on as a second half substitute in favour of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, the German did miss four months of the season through injury but Wenger is confident that he can return to fitness and form now.

“Of course, we have a player on the bench is frustrated but Lukas has fantastic spirit and attitude and he showed that when he came on,” said the Frenchman, who has led Arsenal to the top of the Premier League with 16 games remaining.

“He will play. He has been out for four-and-a-half months – it takes you time to get back, but he now looks sharp and when he comes in, he gives us something. First of all, he occupies the flanks, his left foot is intelligent and dangerous but he’s now physically ready.”

Due to his lack of chances, Olivier Giroud has led the line throughout the entire season so Podolski will be hoping to deputise down the middle for the French striker should he need a rest.

“He can as well, yes, because in front of goal, you give him one chance it’s a goal with him. He doesn’t hit it in the stands.”

Podolski has converted 50% of his chances in the Premier League this season.
