Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has declared that is still hopeful Gunners right-back Bacary Sagna will commit his future to the North London side, according TalkSport.

The 30 year-old’s current deal expires in the summer and he is now free to talks to other clubs under current rules. However, Wenger is keen to tie the Frenchman, who joined from Auxerre in 2007, to a new deal.

“We try to secure Sagna because he is a very important player for the group. He will continue to be fully committed to the group,” Wenger declared.

Sagna has been a key member of Arsenal’s defence for many years and his performances have been central to the back four’s overall improvement this season. However, having stalled over a new contract offer and allowed his current deal to run down, his future remains in doubt.

Interest from his homeland in the form of Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League rivals Manchester City may have turned his head and his departure would represent a significant blow for Arsenal with no immediate replacement of Sagna’s calibre at the club.

Losing another player to the clutches of big spending Manchester City, who have signed Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Adebayor in recent years would be a bitter pill for Wenger to swallow.
