Reports: Athletic Bilbao offer €25 million for Real Madrid's Asier Illarramendi

Asier Illarramendi of Real Madrid in action against Celta Vigo

Spanish giants Real Madrid had considered not to make any alterations to their squad during the January transfer window but all that is likely to change after a proposal from Athletico Bilbao. Athletico Bilbao has offered a tempting deal to secure the services of Asier Illarramendi from the European champions.

It has been reported by Marca, the Spanish newspaper, that Athletico Bilbao president Josu Urrutia has proposed an attractive offer of €20-25 million to get the 24-year-old midfielder. The European champions are enticed by the interest from their La Liga counterpart and are planning to give the offer a serious thought. Illarra’s move is supposed to acclerate the arrival of the Brazilian Lucas Silva.

Deal benefits both the teams and the player

Real Madrid and Athletic are both said to be concentrating on working out the details of the potential transfer for the former Real Sociedad youth academy product. Florentino Perez, who had started a policy at Bernabeu to bring in as many Spanish footballers into the team – a strategy that brought talents like Illaramendi and Isco, has always supported the midfielder, even without getting a considerate amount of first team chances by the current coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The arrangement is most likely to be successful as the deal interests both the teams. The addition of the midfielder will bolster Athletico Bilbao’s coach Ernesto Valverde’s midfield and Real will gain a significant amount of approximately €25 million for a footballer, who does not fall in Ancelloti’s current scheme of things.

The player will also benefit with a first-team role. The Real Madrid coach has not been willing to let Illaramendi leave, despite the Spaniard not being able to make the team even in Luka Modric’s injury absence.
