Barcelona defender Dani Alves had contemplated donating his liver to his ailing teammate Eric Abidal, 101 Great Goals reports.

Abidal, 34, went under the knife for a transplant due to a tumor detected in his liver.

The French international’s teammate and close friend Dani Alves chose to wear the number 22 shirt as a tribute to the player.

Abidal confessed in an interview to Catalunya Radio that Alves had offered to donate his liver in order to cure his friend.

“My relationship with Dani goes much further than him taking my old No.22 shirt. When I had to undergo surgery, he offered to donate his liver.”

“Of course, it’s completely out of the question because he is a professional footballer. Our relationship goes much deeper than friendship.”

Abidal spend seven seasons in Barcelona before transferring to French club Monaco this summer.
