Lionel Messi limped out of last night’s match against Real Betis with a hamstring injury and the club’s worst fears have been realized.

On a night where Barcelona won 4-1, the club suffered a huge blow as an ultrasound confirmed that his thigh muscle injury will take 6-8 weeks to heal. Messi tore his left hamstring in the game and was substituted in the 22nd minute. This means that he may not be back for the Catalan side until the New Year.

A club statement said, “According to the club’s medical services, the tests taken on Monday morning by Leo Messi have confirmed that the player has suffered a torn muscle in the femoral biceps of his left leg. The approximate time he will be out is between six and eight weeks. The first part of his recovery will take place in Barcelona and the second, in Buenos Aires.”

Barcelona team mate Cesc Fabregas has urged the Argentine striker to take his time and return with full fitness.

“Messi has to stop to take the time that he needs to emphasise his explosiveness. Something similar happened to me and I was badly affected,” said the Spain international.
