Barnsley fan rescued from deserted stadium toilet

A young Barnsley FC fan was stuck in a toilet in the stadium for hours before he could be rescued

A young Barnsley fan had to be rescued from a deserted stadium after he fell asleep in the toilet during the half-time break of the match against Fleetwood on Saturday. The funny thing though was that the supporter reportedly managed to get a good nap in a public toilet as he woke up seven hours later to find himself in the precarious situation.

While he managed to get out of the toilet, he was only able to make it to the Oakwell concourse before setting off security alarms. A group of firefighters who arrived at the spot had to get the young fan, who seemed in his twenties, off a temporary building. It has been understood that the youngster was yelling for help without his shoes or his mobile phone to get the attention of the firefighters.

A fire station spokesperson gave his account to the Yorkshire post off the incident: “We got the call through to attend Oakwell and usually its just a false alarm. But we turned up and saw this young lad trying to get our attention.

“We had to get the ladder to get him down. He had no shoes on and had lost his mobile phone and his hat. He was more bothered about his hat, though, he seemed a smartly dressed lad.”

The fan himself admitted that he got into the mess because of too many drinks but was fortunate not to miss any major event as his team, who were 1-0 down at half time ended the match the same way.

Barnsley’s footballing history

Barnsley are currently among the worst performers in the third tier of English football, as they are placed 21st in the league. They have only won four games this year and are four points above the bottom-placed team. The club which was founded in 1887 has a rather unsavoury record for most number of seasons spent in the second division of English football.

In the entire history of the club, they have only spent one season in the Premier League. While they have not seen too much league success, they have won the FA Cup. In the 2007-08 season, they came really close to an FA Cup finals, but sadly lost to Cardiff City and were knocked out of the competition.
