Bastian Schweinsteiger thinks Martial and Depay can achieve a lot at Manchester United

Bastian Schweinsteiger talks about his teammates Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay

Bastian Schweinsteiger says he is ready to mentor Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay to reach their potential, as he believes Manchester United youngsters have the makings of world-class footballers, according to Daily Mail. While Depay is the more experienced amongst the duo, Martial is the one who has performed better for United.

Both players have already made their mark on the league with Martial scoring thrice and Depay scoring once. But the German international feels the duo can get better and is ready to help them.

In United’s match day programme ahead of the Champions League fixture against Wolfsburg, the 31-year said: “Memphis and Martial can achieve a lot. They are both very young, but both very talented.

“If they make the right decisions and take the right steps in the future, then they can give a lot of power to Manchester United. For me, the most important thing is that they have a good personality and a good character, and they do! That is what’s most important, and with the quality they can achieve a lot.

“I will try to guide them, of course.”

United, who lost their first Champions League match against Dutch Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, will be relying on Schweinsteiger’s experience against Wolfsburg from his time in the Bundesliga to beat them. Schweinsteiger who has played several matches against Wolfsburg during his time at Bayern Munich, will be facing the side for the first time after his move to Manchester United.

“I have played a lot of matches at Champions League level and it is always a little bit different to Premier League and Bundesliga games,” he added.

“It is always a special night when you walk onto the field and the anthem comes on. It is a big honour to play Champions League games, so I will try to give my best and try to help my younger team-mates.”

Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera to miss Wolfsburg match

While United will be looking for a win and first points of the season, they don’t want to risk injuring some of their players in the match. Ahead of the game, Louis van Gaal said Michael Carrick, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrara and Antonio Valencia will not feature in the Champions League fixture as he doesn’t want to lose them to injury.

“They have minor injuries and I don't want to take any risks. We will have to wait and see,” Van Gaal said, according to Sky Sports.

“I don't want to take risks like we have done with Wayne Rooney because we have to play a full season and it's better to withdraw players for one match than for them to play and get injured.”

Wolfsburg, on the other hand, will be looking to do better after their poor performance in the league where they drew 1-1 to Hannover and lost 5-1 to Bayern Munich.
