Former Croatia manager Slaven Bilic was today named as the new coach of Turkish side Besiktas, the club announced on its website.

The 44-year-old – who was part of the Crotia side that reached the 1998 World Cup semi-finals – signed a three year deal worth 4.8 million euros ($6.2 million).

Bilic takes over the reins at the Turkish side after spells with Hajduk Split, Croatia, and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Bilic, who guided Croatia to two successive Euro finals in 2008 – where they reached the quarter-finals – and 2012, takes over a club reeling after UEFA on Tuesday had barred them from the Europa League next season because of a domestic match fixing scandal dating back to the 2010/11 season.
