Profits galore for Juergen Klopp’s club

German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund have over the last three years not only made rapid improvements on the pitch by twice winning the Bundesliga and reaching last season’s UEFA Champions League, but also off the pitch as they moved into the financial elite of European football clubs by topping more than 300 million Euros as turnover. The club from Ruhr valley, today announced their best ever figures in which they achieved a record turnover of €305 million, breaking the critical €250m barrier, which is a 61.3 percent increase on the previous years figure of €189m.

The Champions League success increased their TV revenue to €88m, up from €60m in the previous year, while commercial income counted for €121m of the total and matchday revenue at €44m, taking combined ‘football’ revenue to €253m, while the club generated a further €52m from the sales of Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich and Ivan Perisic to VfL Wolfsburg over the summer.

But the money received through transfers was reinvested in Armenian Henrikh Mkhitaryan for €27.5million, Gabons Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for €13million and Sokratis Papastathopoulos for €9.5million, who together cost the club €50million.

Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund logged a net profit of €51.2million ($68.4 million) for the 2012/13 season and the bottom-line earnings thus rose by about 86 percent season-on-season at Germany’s only stock exchange-listed football club and meant the best financial result for Dortmund in their more than 100-year history.
