Bradford City AFC have decided to sack Lerry Berry, who has been the club’s mascot City Gent for 20 years. Berry, 59, has been a favourite among the fans, entertaining them throughout his career and the news has come as a shock to them. What has shocked the fans more is the reason behind his forced retirement.

It has been reported that the club officials took the decision because they do not find Berry bulky enough to continue his job. Berry has lost considerable weight for health reasons after being diagnosed with diabetes and that might have triggered the decision.

“In the case of the City Gent, the main issue was his physical appearance, which was much changed from the original concept of the then chairman, the late Stafford Heginbotham, who styled The City Gent on himself,” the club’s commercial director Roger Owen told reporters.

“We agreed that action needed to be taken. I met Lenny late Friday and he gave me his decision, which he had been pondering for some three weeks,” he added.
