Brazilian striker Fred announces his retirement from International football

Brazil’s infamous 7-1 defeat to Germany proved to be Fred’s final international game

Brazilian striker Fred has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s defeat at the hands of Germany and The Netherlands.

The 30-year old had a disappointing World Cup campaign as he scored only one goal from six matches. Fred was made the scapegoat after Brazil’s humiliating 7-1 defeat in the semi-finals against Germany. Following the result, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari didn't field him in the staring 11 for the third place match against the Netherlands.

The Fluminense striker looked a far cry from the one who had helped the Selecaos clinch the Confederation Cup last year as he had finished the tournament as the highest goal scorer.

"For me, the Selecao is finished,"said Fred in an interview with Estado de Sao Paulo.

Fred made his debut for Brazil in 2005 and has scored 18 goals in 39 matches.
