Brazilian winger Everton Ribeiro is exactly who Manchester United need

Manchester United are struggling. Two losses on the trot in the Premier League, against Everton and Newcastle respectively, sees the Red Devils sit in ninth position – that is, an overwhelming 13 points behind league leaders Arsenal. And with another 23 league matches until the conclusion of the season, it seems the prospect of winning back-to-back EPL titles is already out of the reach of David Moyes’ troops. And after what was yet another underwhelming summer transfer window, the 50-year-old Scot only has himself to blame.

Throughout the duration of the window, Manchester United were constantly linked with the arrival of world-class midfielders; Barca’s Cesc Fabregas, Bayern’s Thiago Alcantara and Roma’s Kevin Strootman were just a few of the candidates which were touted as favourites to fill that creative attacking midfield role. And, true to form, the club’s interest failed to materialise – their failure to acquire the world’s elite has cost them dearly.

However, if rumours are to be believed, Manchester United fans better strap on their seat belts; with numerous media outlets suggesting that a move for the Brazilian player of the year – Everton Ribeiro – is on the cards.

There is no doubting his potential. Known for his dribbling and creativity since his younger days at Corinthians, Ribeiro never lived up to the hype that surrounded him as a young player. His failure to make a breakthrough into the first team resulted in a transfer to Sao Caetano. It was there that he started to show some promise and was later selected to represent Brazil U-20s in the South American Championships back in 2009.

A move later to Coritiba saw the 24-year-old impress in patches. It was not until this season, however, that consistency entered his game.

His seven goals and 11 assists in 35 Brasileirão appearances saw him become an integral part of his side as Cruzeiro won the league for the first time in 10 years, racking up 76 points in the process – 11 more than second placed Gremio.

Intelligent and perplexing with the ball at his feet, Everton, more often than not, poses a threat to opposing defences. He enjoys cutting inside from the right flank and onto his favoured left boot in search of that deadly through ball, has the ability to connect well with teammates, often showcasing nifty one-twos and has proved to be a goal-scoring threat. His statistics this season alone are a testament to his undeniable ability.

Having said that, his tactical flexibility allows him to play mostly in advanced attacking positions. Although he enjoys occupying the wing, Ribeiro is often seen patrolling the centre of the park. His ability to play in majority of attacking positions will prove handy for Moyes, who’s side have been somewhat one-sided at times; dominance in the centre of the pitch is counterpointed by a lack of flair on the wings and vice versa.

Despite his abilities, his small body-frame often sees him bullied by more physical opposition. And despite his skill, his lack of physicality may prove to be a problem when playing in Europe.

Versatile and cunning, Ribeiro has everything it takes to succeed at Old Trafford. Having recently spoken of his admiration for the Red Devils, it seems that Moyes and co. are in the box-seat to sign the 24-year-old late bloomer. And with everything going according to the script, Manchester United have no excuses not to sign the man they desperately need.
