Brendan Rodgers: Qualifying for Champions League should bring in big players

Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has claimed that should they qualify for the Champions League this season, they have a greater chance of signing quality players.

The Reds are currently in fourth, six points clear of Tottenham, and had the chance to extend that to nine points today when they faced Southampton.

Liverpool haven’t been in the Champions League since they were knocked out in 2010 under Rafael Benitez and have struggled for several seasons to fight their way back into contention.

Rodgers’ side are currently four points behind the Premier League leaders Chelsea after collecting an impressive 14 points from a possible 18 in recent weeks.

And Rodgers thinks that he will be able to sign players who can significantly strengthen his squad if Liverpool secure a top-four finish.

“You have to plan to succeed,” Rodgers told the Liverpool ECHO. “It’s something we are doing already.

“There is no doubt that if you arrive in the Champions League.

“We are certainly not complacent but you certainly have to have two plans ready. There’s no doubt that where you finish and whether you have Champions League football can affect you.

“We know what being back in the Champions League can bring us. If we don’t make it there then we will still look to reinforce the squad in the summer and look to make more strides forward.”
