Berlin, April 6 (IANS) Schalke were held to a goalless draw by Augsburg in the Bundesliga while Hertha Berlin snatched a 2-0 win thanks to two second-half goals.

Fifth-placed Schalke dropped points in the hunt for a Champions League berth as they were held to a goalless draw by sixth placed Augsburg on Sunday. However both clubs are set to qualify for the Europa League, reports Xinhua.

Both teams staged a fast paced attacking game, but Augsburg were unable to overcome Schalke's well-positioned defence and tried to score with long range efforts but they weren't able to break the deadlock from the distance.

After the restart, Schalke had the golden chance to open the scoring but striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar squandered the chance from promising position with just goalkeeper Marwin Hitz to beat.

With this result, both teams remained in their earlier league positions. Schalke stayed in 5th place, eight points adrift of fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Augsburg remained a point behind Schalke on the sixth position with 39 points.

Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin defeated newly promoted and relegation-threatened Paderborn 2-0.

Both teams lacked penetration in the first half, but things changed in the second half as Berlin broke the deadlock in the 68th minute through forward Valentin Stocker. Paderborn were unable to clear the ball from the penalty area following a free kick that dropped off the bar, allowing Stocker to poke home from six meters.

Berlin gained momentum and worked out opportunities through midfielders Salomon Kalou and Genki Haraguchi before forward Nico Schulz volleyed home a cross at the far post to make the game safe with two minutes remaining.

With the crucial win, Berlin jump from the 13th to the 11th place while Paderborn remain at the 17th position in the standings.
