Manchester City progressed to the next round of the Capital One Cup with a 5-1 demolition of fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace. City had no trouble dispatching an off-colour Palace with Wilfried Bony, Yaya Toure, De Bruyne, Garcia and Iheanacho all bagging a goal apiece.
Manchester United were dumped out of the cup by an impressive Middlesborough side 3-1 on penalties. United were held goalless by a spirited Middlesborough at the end of normal time as the game needed extra time to settle the tie. Boro rode on keeper Mejias’ heroics as they go through to the next round at the expense of the Red Devils.
Liverpool produced their first ever win under new manager Jurgen Klopp as they edged out Bournemouth 1-0 to enter the next round meanwhile Southampton beat managerless Aston Villa 2-1 at home.
Manchester United vs Middlesborough
Championship side Middlesborough visited Old Trafford to take on the Red Devils. Captain Wayne Rooney started on the bench along with David de Gea. The first-half was eventful with both teams with decent chances. The visitors did not hold back as they were adventurous with their forays into the United half. But neither side were able to find the killer pass to open their accounts.
United started the second-half brightly as Van Gaal brought on Wayne Rooney in place of James Wilson. It was exciting end to end football for most of the initial exchanges. However, United survived a huge scare as Sergio Romero almost turned in a back pass into his own net. Jesse Lingard came close for the hosts as his thunderous effort rattled the crossbar towards the end of the half.
Romero produced two excellent reaction saves in stoppage time to keep United in the game as the match needed extra time to separate the two teams. United were denied a penalty in the second half of extra time as Ayala handled the ball in the box. Fellaini and Martial missed two great chances just before the final whistle as the two teams headed towards penalties.
Boro stopper Mejias denied Rooney and Ashley Young and Micheal Carrick blazed his shot over the bar as Boro won 3-1 on penalties and pulled off a major upset at Old Trafford.
Manchester City vs Crystal Palace
Manchester City welcomed Crystal Palace to the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini rested England International Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany was again left on the bench. City deservedly opened the scoring through a Wilfried Bony header in the 22nd minute assisted by Serbian Alexander Kolarov.
City then doubled the lead as the in-form Kevin de Bruyne found the back of the net just before the half-time whistle. De Bruyne then turned provider as he set up youngster Iheanacho to score past the keeper to make it 3-0. The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute for a foul by Delaney which Yaya Toure converted with relative ease to extend their lead to four goals.
Crystal Palace managed to secure a late consolation through Delaney, but there was still time for City to get a fifth goal on the night as youngster Garcia Alonso scored on the break to make it 5-1 for the hosts.
Liverpool vs AFC Bournemouth
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool played host to Premier League strugglers AFC Bournemouth. The home side started the match strongly with decent efforts from the lively Roberto Firmino. The Reds managed to take the lead in the 17th minute through an unlikely source as Nathaniel Clyne’s left-footed shot from the centre of the box found the bottom corner.
Liverpool, who are already reeling with an injury crisis, were dealt another blow as defender Kolo Toure walked off injured in the 33rd minute. The hosts held on to the lead to record their first win under Jurgen Klopp.
Southampton vs Aston Villa
Aston Villa, who were playing for the first time since sacking manager Tim Sherwood, visited Southampton. The home side were without Sadio Mane through suspension while Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez sat out through injury. It was an evenly matched contest in the first half with both teams unable to break down the opposition defence.
The home side managed to break the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Japan International Maya Yoshida. Graziano Pelle then made it 2-0 for the hosts as he converted an assist from substitute Tadic. Scott Sinclair pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 90th minute, but it came a little too late for the visitors as Southampton held out for a 2-1 win
