Champions League Draw: Real Madrid and Barcelona handed tough draws in Round of 16

The UEFA Champions League draw for the Round of 16 was held in Switzerland

16 teams have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages and the draw to see who they would face in the Round of 16 was held in Switzerland on Monday morning.

Defending champions Real Madrid were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain who set a new record for most goals in the group stages of the competition. Meanwhile, Barcelona were drawn with Premier League side Chelsea.

Two-time Champions League winner Xabi Alonso was present to make the draw and he commented on the fact that five Premier League clubs making it to the knockout stages for the first time was great news for the fans but also warned that they would come up against bigger teams now that they were in the Round of 16.

Group Winners

Manchester United (England), Paris Saint-Germain (France), AS Roma (Italy), Barcelona (Spain), Liverpool (England), Manchester City (England), Besiktas (Turkey), Tottenham Hotspur (England).

Group Runners-Up

FC Basel (Switzerland), Bayern Munich (Germany), Chelsea (England), Juventus (Italy), Sevilla (Spain), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Porto (Portugal), Real Madrid (Spain).

Rules of the Draw

1) The group winners are seeded and the group runners-up are unseeded. Therefore a group winner cannot be drawn against another group winner.

2) The seeded teams (group winners) will play the second leg at home.

3) Teams who played each other in the same group cannot be drawn against each other in the Round of 16.

4) Teams from the same country cannot be drawn against each other either. Eg. even though Barcelona finished as group winners and Real Madrid as runners-up, an El Clasico will not be possible in the Round of 16.

The same applies to Chelsea who will not face the other Premier League sides who finished as group winners.

Teams from the same association can only be drawn against each other from the quarter-final stage onwards.

Dates for the Round of 16 matches

First leg: 13/14 and 20/21 February

Second leg: 6/7 and 13/14 March

Once the final eight teams are through, the quarter-final draw will be held on 16 March.
