Copa America 2011: Uruguay vs Mexico Preview

Copa America 2011 Group CUruguay vs MexicoVenue: La PlataDate: July 13 Time: 07:15 AM (IST)

In the Copa America 2011 Group C clash tonight at La Plata, Uruguay takes on Mexico in a do or die situation for both the team. On the verge of elimination from the group round itself, both Mexico and Uruguay have to give their best to progress into the Quarter final round of the oldest continental championship.

Coming into the game after failing to defeat Peru in their opening game, the star studded Uruguay side once again failed to overcome the discipline and stylist Chile in their second game. With both Chile and Peru virtually through to the Quarter Finals with four points each, Uruguay still do have a chance but will have to overcome the young fearless Mexican side. A draw will ensure their place in the quarterfinals, but will not guarantee them a favourable last eight draw.

Mexico, the only team without a point so far in this tournament, has to overcome Oscar Tabarez side by many goals to qualify as the second best third place team. However they will have to wait to confirm their place till the end of Group B matches. Anything less than three points will see them board an early flight back home.

Though Luis Suarez and Alvaro Pereira have already scored for Uruguay, 2010 World Cup best player Diego Forlan is yet to get into the grove and score for his side. He will be looking to give his best today and take Uruguay through to the next round.

Tabarez will deploy a 4-4-2 system for this match, as Porto‘s Alvaro Pereira drops back to defence from his usual midfield position, replacing Martin Caceres, who has already picked up two yellow cards. Furthermore Edinson Cavani will remain unavailable because of a knee injury, leaving Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez to lead the line in a forward pairing. Cristian Rodriguez and Alvaro Gonzalez will take up the wing positions in midfield.

Mexico Coach Jose de la Toree must work with what he has at his disposal and is likely to go in with the same side as he has not much option left as he is playing with a second string team and showing faith in the same players might yield him a favorable result.

Mexico, coming to play Copa as an invitee with their second string team will play to salvage their pride after losing two of their previous games. However they have nothing to lose, with all the pressure on World Cup semifinalists Uruguay to book their spot in the last eight of the tournament.
