Copa del Rey 2018-19: Luis Suarez's love affair with the Bernabéu continues

Real Madrid v FC Barcelona - Copa del Rey Semi Final: Second Leg

Another year, another sad story for Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey. Los Blancos were beaten 3-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate by the most successful team in King's Cup, Barcelona.

Just like the first leg, Real Madrid started the game positively and could have been 2 or 3 goals up in the first half if not for their awful finishing. Barcelona struggled in every department in the first half and looked like a shadow of themselves.

But although the first half remained goalless, it was one of the most enjoyable 45 minutes of the season. The game had a terrific tempo which was maintained throughout the half.

The second half started just where the first half ended, and it was again the home side that looked more comfortable on the ball. That was until the 50th minute, when a clever little run from Dembélé was picked up by Jordi Alba on the left wing who cut it back to Luis Suárez. And the Barcelona number nine finished it with its first touch.

The response from Madrid was magnificent. In the 68th minute of the game Vinícius pierced through the Barcelona defense into the box, leaving two Barcelona defenders behind, and shot just wide of the left-hand corner of Marc-André ter Stegen's goal. Vinícius, who looked like the man of the match by a country mile, only has himself to blame because of his wasteful finishing which ultimately cost Real Madrid the game.

In the 69th minute of the game the Los Blancos were caught napping in defense and a beautifully poised ball from Dembélé turned into an own goal by Raphaël Varane. The second goal took the wind out of Madrid's sails.

Casemiro soon committed a foul in the box and the referee pointed straight to the spot. It was the 73rd minute of the game, and Suárez made no mistake - scoring a cheeky Panenka penalty.

This was Suárez's 19th goal against Real Madrid in 18 appearances.

It was not the first time that Barcelona had come out from the capital of Spain with this kind of a scoreline. In fact, this exact scoreline was also seen in last year's El Clásico at the Bernabéu. That's not to forget Barcelona demolished Real Madrid at the Camp Nou with a thumping 5-1 victory in the season's first Clásico.

Real Madrid can only blame themselves for this result. They were superior in the first leg and were arguably the better side over the two legs combined, but if you are not clinical enough in front of goal against a Barcelona side you will suffer.

Barcelona will play either Valencia or Real Betis in the final on the 25th of May, depending upon Thursday night's fixture at Mastalla Stadium.
