Cristiano Ronaldo opts out of Portugal match

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be taking any part in Portugal’s international friendly against Gabon after it was learnt that he briefly lost vision in both eyes. The injury, a gash above the left eye, came as a result of a wayward elbow by Levante defender David Navarro, which left Ronaldo bleeding profusely.

The injury did not seem all too serious at the time, as after a quick patch-up, Ronaldo resumed playing and even went on to score a goal. But clearly there has been internal damage, as Ronaldo complained about not being able to see with either eye.

“He’s dizzy. In the first half he was unable to see properly with that eye, but during the break he couldn’t see properly with either,” Madrid manager Jose Mourinho said on Ronaldo’s injury.

It’s been decided that Ronaldo will fly back to Madrid from the Portugese team’s hotel in Lisbon to recover under the watchful eyes of the Madrid medical staff. This must come as bad news to Portugal coach Paulo Bento, who will have to face Gabon without his star player.
