Cristiano Ronaldo wants Fabio Coentrao to be given an extension

Manchester United could miss out on Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao, according to reports in the Sunday People.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and La Liga topscorer and former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo have urged the club’s president Florentino Perez to keep the Portugal international at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 26-year-old has struggled to get into Ancelotti’s Real’s starting line-up with Marcelo in front of him in the left-back position.

But injury to Brazil international Marcelo has meant he has been called on in recent weeks, and the former Benfica star put in a polished performance as Real Madrid dumped Bayern Munich out of the Champions League

Sunday People Sport report that both Ancelotti and Ronaldo have sung Coentrao’s praises to Florentino Perez, and the club are now ready to extend his contract rather than let him go.

Man United have targeted the Portuguese international, who came close to sealing a move to Old Trafford in the final hours of last summer’s hectic transfer deadline day, has a potential replacement for the widely expected to leave veteran Patrice Evra.
