Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge is set to miss England’s World Cup qualifying game against Ukraine due to an injury.

A statement on the FA website read: “Club England medical staff have been in constant contact with their counterparts at Liverpool Football Club since he returned there on Thursday.

“His injury has not progressed as had been hoped and it is now clear that Sturridge will not be fit for the match in Kiev on Tuesday evening.”

The 24-year-old’s absence was anticipated by England manager Roy Hodgson, who has a massive shortage of strikers with Danny Welbeck out with a suspension and Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney kept out of the squad with injuries.

Sturridge has been in red-hot form for Liverpool scoring in all his appearances for the team this season but was injured while playing against Manchester United, where he scored the only goal of the game.

The FA stated that there will be no new additions to Roy Hodgson’s squad who leave for Ukraine on Sunday.

Ukraine, who had eight players on the score sheet when they thumped San Marino 9-0, are determined to overcome the Three Lions, who lead Group H with 15 points.
