Daniel Sturridge picks up hamstring injury, will be out of action for several weeks

Yet another injury for Sturridge

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has picked up yet another injury during Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United and will reportedly be out of action for several weeks.

The 26-year old was brought on as a substitute by Jurgen Klopp at St. James Park with 28 minutes to go & the striker was on the pitch at the end of the game. Feeling a problem in his leg, Sturridge underwent scans which revealed that he has a hamstring strain.

Sturridge recently returned to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to foot and knee injuries. He came on in the match against Swansea, which the Reds won 1-0. Next up was Southampton and the England international was drafted into the starting line-up for the Capital One Cup quarterfinal. He responded brilliantly as he scored two goals to help the Merseyside club to a 6-1 victory.

However, the striker was not included in the starting line-up for a trip to Tyneside but was named on the bench. Things did not work out as the Kopites might have hoped, with Liverpool going down 0-2 to Newcastle. Liverpool’s woes were compounded further as Sturridge picked up yet another injury, his eighteenth in two and a half years with the Reds.

Nearly a week back Klopp urged Sturridge to learn the difference between ‘serious pain’ and ‘only pain’.

“The situation is Daniel was very often injured in the last few months, and maybe years, so it is normal when you get back in training usually it is not the quality, but you need training,” said Klopp

“Your body has to learn to adapt to new intensities of training and in this time you have to learn what is serious pain and what is only pain. If it wasn’t someone with the quality of Daniel no-one would think about it.”

“Everyone wants him back on the pitch, but we all have to learn. Now we can say [the injury] is not that serious but it is not possible to go on as before so we have to react to every situation – which is normal for injuries.”

Now that Sturridge has again been sidelined, the German manager is left with Christian Benteke and Divock Origi as the two options to lead the attack. Origi’s recent form might come as a respite for Liverpudlians but to lose a striker of the quality of Daniel Sturridge will surely dent their hopes going into the busy December month.
