Danish press unhappy about Wayne Rooney labeling Anders Lindegaard 'annoying'

Wayne Rooney and Anders Lindegaard embrace before a Premier League game

Wayne Rooney, being one of the most popular footballers on the planet, has given plenty of interviews in his glittering career, but he probably never imagined that his comments during an interview would upset a whole nation, which is precisely what happened.

During a recent interview with Sports Magazine, Rooney was asked who he wouldn’t fancy being stuck in a lift with, to which the striker replied: “Anders Lindegaard [now at West Brom]. He’s just annoying.”

The 30-year-old clearly wanted his comments to be taken with a huge pinch of salt, but the press in Denmark, which is Lindegaard’s homeland, weren’t amused and are now making a mountain out of a molehill of Rooney’s comments.

Britain’s famous media wasted no time in jumping onto the bandwagon, with BT Sport questioning whether Rooney’s comments are just banter or something more sinister.

However, Lindegaard has taken a different stance from his countrymen and has clearly seen the humour in his former teammates comments, and took to social networking site Twitter to respond in a rather absurd way.

Lindegaard struggled to upstage De Gea for place in starting lineup

Lindegaard, who moved to West Bromwich Albion last summer, was purchased by former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2010 for a fee of around £3.5 million, but served as an understudy to David De Gea, which restricted him to just 29 appearances in five years.

Despite his lack of first team action, he was still eligible for a Premier League winners medal during the 2012-2013 season, due to him making 10 Premier League appearances as De Gea was out with an injury. The Dane also boasts of two Community Shield titles during his Old Trafford career.

The 31-year-old himself is also no stranger to quirky quotes, which was proven back in 2011 when he was asked whether he would challenge for a first team spot to which he replied: "What answer do you expect to that question? I've said a thousand times before I'm not here to pick my nose."
