Pitted against United yet again

English footballer and Manchester United legend David Beckham is poised to face the Red Devils in a pre-season friendly as he was drafted into the MLS All-Star team that was scheduled to face a touring United squad. The match is scheduled to take part later this month on the 27th of July, and is a part of the pre-season preparations for the boys from Old Trafford.

Beckham was considered as one of the best footballers who had worn the coveted jersey no.7 of Manchester United. His pin-point accuracy while crossing and marauding on the flanks made him one of the most celebrated Right Wingers of our generation. Many consider him as a big reason behind the huge fanbase that Red Devils have all over the world. He is still dear to much of the club’s faithfuls and has icon status in Manchester, even though he had left playing for them almost eight years ago.

In 2003, following an alleged dressing-room bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham left his childhood club for Real Madrid. He was a part of the AC Milan side that got knocked out of the UEFA Champion’s League last year, as he was with the Italians on a loan deal. Another trip to Old Trafford was made when he featured in Gary Neville’s testimonial match against Juventus, in his old position and jersey. Though the United ensemble lost the match, the return of Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, and Beckham to the Theater of Dreams gave the fans a lot to be happy about.

Beckham signed for LA Galaxy in 2007, and this is the first time he would be facing United with a MLS-ensemble team. Arsenal cult-hero Thierry Henry has also been named in the first eleven along with ex-Toffees loanee, Landon Donovan. Ex-Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez is also included in the team and among the few players with experience of European football.

A similar fixture was held last year, where United came through with a 5-2 thrashing of the MLS All-Stars. Kiko Macheda netted twice in the game while Mexican sensation Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverly, and Darron Gibson got a goal each. Brian Ching and De Rosario scored for the All-Stars.
