Ecuador announce World Cup Squad

Ecuador manager, Reinaldo Rueda, announced a 24-man provisional squad for the FIFA World Cup 2014 on Monday. The squad consists mainly of local stars with 11 players currently playing in the Ecuadorian Serie A. The squad will be trimmed down to 23 by 2nd June.

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia makes a return to the squad for the first time since 2011. The squad also includes veteran goalkeeper, Maximo Banguera and Dynamo Moscow midfielder, Christian Noboa. Defender Walter Ayovi is the most experienced player in the squad with a whopping 88 caps.

Rueda has also included youngsters Carlos Gruezo and Cristian Ramirez, both of whom are only 19 and are set to play in their first World Cup. Gruezo is a midfielder who plays for German Bundesliga side Stuttgart while Ramirez is a defender who plays for German 2nd Division side, Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Ecuador are in Group E along with France, Honduras and Switzerland. They start their journey on June 15 and face Switzerland.

Midfielders: Segundo Castillo (Al Hilal), Carlos Gruezo (Stuttgart), Renato Ibarra (Vitesse Arnhem), Fidel Martinez (Tijuana), Cristian Noboa (Dynamo Moscow), Pedro Quinonez (Emelec), Luis Saritama (Barcelona, Ecuador), Antonio Valencia (Manchester United)
