Ed Woodward fails to fulfill his promise to bring ‘Football Club’ back to the Manchester United crest

Manchester United new kit
Manchester United unveiled their new home kit on Monday.

Manchester United revealed their new home kit for the upcoming 2014/15 season on Monday, and it seems like that the club's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has failed to live up to his promise to restore the words ‘Football Club’ to the team’s badge after it had been missing since 1998.

Speaking to reporters last year, Woodward said, "I didn’t like that change of badge. Joel [Glazer] didn’t like that change. We will look at that and have a think about that. We are a football club, not a business.”

"I described it to our staff that we are a 135-year-old club and that’s what you have to remember. We are a football club, a club with a capital C. Strapped to that is a commercial business that’s going to fund a lot of the player purchases going forward here and we have to be supportive of both. We’ve got to make sure they co-exist together but don’t impact each other and that’s where we are trying to balance it."

"The heritage is not just important it is central to what we are trying to do," he added. "As an example we will not rename Old Trafford, the name is part of the fabric of the club. It means something to our fans. They are long-term owners, together with our other shareholders. They first bought the club eight years ago and there won’t be any change for many, many years," he had said last year.

Manchester United badge
The words ‘Football Club’ is still missing from the club’s kit.

In an attempt to disperse the image that the Glazers are ignorant towards the development of Manchester United, Owner Joel Glazer had given a green light to the idea of restoring the words ‘Football Club’ to their emblem. The plan was to bring back the old badge that was removed in 1998 which says ‘Manchester United Football Club’ instead of just ‘Manchester United’, thus promoting the club as something more important than business.

However, with the unveiling of the new kit, it is quite evident that there hasn’t been any changes made with the words ‘Football Club’ still missing from the team’s badge.
