Keylor Navas has been sensational for Real Madrid this season

Keylor Navas was very close to leaving Real Madrid in the summer with David De Gea expected to take his place for Los Blancos. However, due to a fax machine problem, Navas ended up staying at Real Madrid. The Spanish giants must be thrilled with the fact that Navas stayed as he has been in stunning form this season.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edvin Van der Sar had his say on how the situation worked out when he gave an interview to AS. The legendary Dutchman was full of praise for Keylor Navas:

“He had a difficult task replacing Iker Casillas, who had been there for many years, played in a lot of big games and won a lot of trophies for the club. I think Keylor has been doing very well. I talked to him at the training session and he comes across as a kid with his feet on the ground. It’s great that he has the opportunity to play for this great club.”

Edwin van der Sar had gone 657 minutes without conceding in the Champions League in Ajax’s dream run in 1995/96. However , Navas broke that record in the Champions League this season.

“He overtook me, I think I’m third now. It’s an incredible achievement. Teams need good keepers, but also good defenders and midfielder, so it’s good for him that Madrid have those players.”

He also had a simple answer when asked about De Gea playing at Real Madrid.

“No, De Gea plays for Manchester United.”

He also added

“I think Real Madrid already have a very good keeper in Keylor Navas, he is also a very strong keeper and he’s been important to the club. That’s the situation at the moment.”

Fans pick Keylor Navas over David de Gea to be their goalkeeper next season

Real Madrid fans were asked to vote for the man they wanted to be their goalkeeper in the coming season, and the fans chose Keylor Navas by a resounding margin over the team's reported summer target, Manchester United’s David de Gea. In a survey conducted by Spanish newspaper AS, 79% of fans voted in Navas’ favour.

The fans have seen him in action and appreciate what he has added to the side. That is exactly why they want him to be their custodian for the coming season as well.
