EPL 2016-17: How Joe Allen found about his move to Stoke City

Joe Allen expressed his disappointment over the way he was informed of his transfer to Stoke City

Following his move to Stoke City, Joe Allen has hit out at the manner in which Liverpool handled informing him of his transfer.

Allen had a brilliant run in the Euros which awarded him a place in Uefa's Team of the Tournament. The Welshman played a crucial role in Liverpool's road to Europa League final in which the reds lost out 3-1 to a strong Sevilla side. He was targeted by fans at the start of last season but received a new lease of life under Jurgen Klopp. His performances from the bench were game changing at times as the German resorted to Allen in demanding times in the second half of the season.

Joe Allen has revealed that he felt disappointed on his sale to Stoke City as he spoke heart out, " I actually had a text message off a friend congratulating me about making the move when I didn’t even know it was happening at the time," the 26-year-old explained on his £13 million move to the Potters.

He continued, “Not knowing whether the club intend to sell you or keep you, especially when you’re trying to ask the question, is disappointing. If I’m honest, to find out they accepted an offer through the press isn’t the best way of going about business, I don’t think. The communication wasn’t great but as soon as Liverpool accepted an offer I knew what their intentions were for me. It was a bit strange but that’s how things happen sometimes." Many fans had their views turned about Allen as the supporters wanted the club to offer a new contract for the Welshman.

The Welshman was practical about his chances at Liverpool as the competition is tougher than ever at Anfield for the midfield spots. Allen said on his move, “Being a regular wasn’t going to happen and that’s fair enough. If you look at the quality Liverpool have got in midfield, and maybe the age of the players, I think I’d have been waiting for injuries and suspensions. Realistically, if you’ve been there four years you expect more than that. I’m not going to be happy unless I’m on the pitch on a regular basis. I’m 26 now and the next four or five years are going to be my best. ”

This was the best time for Allen to find a new club as his stock was high following his exploits in the Euros for a fairytale campaign for Wales. He achieved a cult status at the club because of his sarcastic comparisons to Xavi and Pirlo as The Welsh Xavi, became a part of his description. His bearded long hair look was a hit among the fans and Allen will receive a warm welcome when Stoke travel to Liverpool on Boxing Day.

The capture of the midfielder as well as the signing of Ramadan Sobhi represents a signal of intent from the Potters, as they look to have a successful Premier League campaign.
