Pogba and Ibrahimovic have to prove their mettle if they want to be a success in the Premier League

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United and has doubted the Red Devils' ability to secure Champions League qualification this season. He also criticised new signings, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba as United have not set the ball rolling this season despite spending more than £150 million again this summer.

Merson aired his views on his column for the Daily Star and the former Arsenal mane felt that United still lack the firepower to challenge on all fronts despite having a star-studded squad. “Manchester United are going to struggle to finish in the top four at the rate they’re going. I’m not sure they are Champions League material. They should have blown Stoke away in the first 20 minutes last Sunday. But after that, I’m not sure they looked like scoring."

The most expensive signing of all time, Paul Pogba has failed to live up to the expectations and has been criticised for his lackluster performances for his new club. Merson also believed that the pair of Zlatan and Pogba ignore other players, “United have problems. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba just seem to look for each other all the time and ignore everyone else."

Ibrahimovic has started his stint at Old Trafford on a good note as the Swede has scored six goals in eleven appearances for his new club.

Another new signing, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has yet to get a proper chance to impress the United faithful as Merson further questioned United's captain Wayne Rooney's role in the team. “Mkhitaryan has hardly played. If he does, Wayne Rooney is not getting another kick." Manchester United dropped points last weekend against Stoke City as United lie sixth in the Premier League table.

Testing times for Manchester United coming up

Manchester United were in the news for all the wrong reasons recently as the club banned a fan from attending away games this season because he missed one game in September. The club has been branded disgraceful over their actions as the supporters are angry over the ban imposed on an innocent fan.

Things are not getting any easier for the club as United face rivals Liverpool next as Mourinho will look to win his first big game after arriving in July with the Portuguese having a good record against the Reds during his two stints with Chelsea.
