Keane has his say

Former Manchester United midfielder, Roy Keane has voiced his opinion on what Arsenal should think about when offering stars Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil new contracts. It has been reported that the Gunners are keen on retaining two of their best players and are willing to give a gargantuan sum of money in order to do so.

While La Liga has Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to boast about, the Premier League have their own star power with the likes of the Chilean and the German playing in the league. Hence, giving them a king size contract is just what they would be worthy of.

However, the Irishman believes that keeping the two at the club would be more than just about how much money they would be offered as there is a question of guarantees when it comes to being able to challenge for titles on a consistent basis.

“Surely it won’t just be about money for these players [Sanchez and Ozil],” Keane told ITV Sport.

“There will be a couple of things on their mind. They’ll be looking at if their club is capable of going on to win trophies in the next few years.”

Keane then went on to state that Arsene Wenger’s contract expiration could also play a role when it comes to the negotiation.

“Will Wenger’s contract which expires come into the equation? It won’t just be about money. Forget China, you don’t want to be going to China.”

Meanwhile, Keane, who is notorious for his outspoken nature, also added that Manchester City are perhaps not as good as they think. He also stated that the City’s complacency against Celtic after leading the game was a sign of disrespect, something that could have hurt the Citizens.

“Their squad probably isn’t as good as maybe Manchester City think or even the manager. Obviously they knew they were already through, but they showed a lot of disrespect to Celtic and Celtic were the slightly better team and could have gone on to win.”

When asked whether he thought that Pep Guardiola’s men could struggle in the knockout stages of the competition, he said: “I think so. Particularly defensively.”

While Roy Keane’s claims might seem like a biased one, given his former allegiance with City’s arch-rivals, Manchester United, one can’t help but think that the former Barcelona manager has his work cut out despite making an astute start to the season.
